Planning & Communication

Moving with kids is no small process, so you’ll want to start planning as early as possible. As a first step, create a rough timeline for the move. Set important milestones to help everyone stay on track, such as packing up toys or taking a family trip to the donation centre to clear out the things you won’t be bringing to your new home.

As you get things ready, encourage your kids to be open about how they feel. Ask them to share their feelings, even if they are negative or resistant to change. This gives you the opportunity to provide reassurance and ease their nerves.

Keep a Routine

Children thrive on routines, and a major life change like moving can disrupt their sense of stability. Try to maintain familiar routines as much as possible. Stick to regular meal times, bedtime rituals, and other daily activities.

In addition to their comfort, having a routine can also help you keep your home clean during the selling process – which will be an essential part of attracting buyers. In the weeks and months leading up to your move, make tidying up a part of your children’s regular schedule.

Research Schools & Childcare in Advance

This is a big one. If you and your family are moving to an entirely different neighbourhood or city, you’ll want to iron out important details in advance – like where they will be attending school. Time can fly during your move and you’ll be glad to have taken care of this step in advance.

Be Ready For Moving Day

Even with the right planning and preparation moving day can feel hectic. With that in mind, it may be best for your little ones to stay clear of the commotion.

If your kids are really little, consider making childcare arrangements for the big day – such as staying with a grandparent, family friend, or babysitter. If your kids are old enough, make them feel involved in the process by giving them specific responsibilities or tasks.

Helping Them Get Settled

Moving is a big transition – especially for kids. Although it can be exciting, it can also feel scary or confusing for them at times. With this in mind, you’ll want to have a plan in place to help them get settled in your new home.

Once everything is moved in, consider unpacking and setting up your children’s rooms first. Having familiar belongings around them will help them feel a sense of security and normalcy, finding comfort in their new surroundings.

If they’re old enough, let your kids help unpack their personal belongings like clothes or toys. This will allow them to take ownership of their new space and create a sense of home.

Explore Together

If you’re moving to a community that’s new or unfamiliar to you and your family, why not explore it together? Go for walks, visit nearby parks, and check out nearby spots that are popular with families and kids. Don’t be afraid to research online or ask your real estate agent for their local recommendations.
